War is everything we know.

Humanity has got it all wrong. It has turned a blind eye to the spiritual forces desperately contending for this world. Unequipped and unarmored, we wander aimlessly on the front lines, moving from trench to trench, neglecting the great weight of this full-scale conflict (Ephesians 6:12-20).

War is the backdrop of human history. War is the setting of every death, birth, and redemption.

The entire story of mankind is of an intense conflict, a holy war that infiltrates and influences every aspect of human life.

Yet we have forgotten an even greater truth. Yahweh is a warrior God. This quote was first sung on the bank of the Red Sea after the Israelites watched Yahweh crush and drown Israel's Egyptian enemy.

God is not the proverbial nice guy in the sky. He is a warrior. As C.S. Lewis pointed out, God is extremely dangerous and yet His Heart is Good.

Much of Christianity today has turned God into the ultimate push-over nag, content with the long distance mothering of humanity through His glorified rule book. We have painted this picture of an impotent, cosmic pansy. We have turned His Son Jesus into a long-haired flip flop wearing Norwegian hippy who was inoffensive, boring, and overly critical of having a good time.

We have forgotten that the Bible is framed between the war of heaven and hell.

Millennia ago, the commander of Hell rebelled against God. A third of the angels were cast from heaven and this world entered into an ancient conflict that has devoured the lives and souls of countless millions.

After God destroyed the Egyptians, the Jews treated the name of Yahweh with such reverence and respect that they wouldn't even speak it. As thousands of years passed He moved heroes, judges, and prophets whom this world is not worthy of to fulfill His almighty battle plan (Hebrews 11). For years Satan killed, destroyed, and fought the agents of God. This is the back drop of the text. This theme did not end with the Old Testament. Eventually God Himself stepped in and launched the greatest invasion of all time.

It is beyond the invasions of Normandy or Omaha Beach, Thermopylae, Troy, and Iraq.

The incarnation of Christ is the greatest move of war this world has ever seen. Yahweh himself, the God of Angel armies came in the cover of night, disguised as a bond servant. Today we celebrate this act of war on December 25th. No really! That is what Christmas is. It is a great offensive. Unfortunately most of us have received the feminine version of Jesus in the Manger. Everyone has heard the story of Jesus in Matthew chapter 2, however very few have heard John's version of the story in Revelation. Most do not know that during the birth of Christ the Bible says that there was war in heaven. Nor do they know that Michael the great archangel had to unsheathe his sword and battle back demons so that Christmas as we know it could take place.
Here are some excerpts from John's writings in Revelation 12:

“A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars;
and she was with child; and she cried out, being in labor and in pain to give birth.

Then another sign appeared in heaven: and behold, a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads were seven diadems.
And his tail swept away a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth he might devour her child.

And she gave birth to a son, a male child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron; and her child was caught up to God and to His throne.
Then the woman fled into the wilderness where she had a place prepared by God, so that there she would be nourished for one thousand two hundred and sixty days.

And there was war in heaven, Michael and his angels waging war with the dragon The dragon and his angels waged war, and they were not strong enough, and there was no longer a place found for them in heaven.
And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night.

"And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death.

"For this reason, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them Woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has only a short time."
And when the dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male child.
….
So the dragon was enraged with the woman, and went off to make war with the rest of her children, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus.”

After reading this you should think of Jesus a little differently. I mean it's true that God is not only loving but love itself. If you were a leper, a lame or blind man, or a prostitute Jesus was the kindest man that you had ever encountered. However if you were a self righteous Pharisee or a demon, he would either humiliate or crush you in front of the crowd. Most have never seen the real Jesus, bold enough to throw over the tables of greedy eyed profiteers in the house of God, and bold enough to braid a whip and cast the greedy out. He stood against crowds that were determined to violently smash His head in with rocks. He took the sin of this world, nailed it to a cross, shamed the forces of hell, crushed the ancient serpent, and freed the world from a bondage so dark . Jesus was not some middle eastern version of Mr. Rogers with a beard.

Jesus is a warrior. The New Testament acclaims that He will return on a War Horse wearing a robe that has been stained with blood. Our Savior is a Warrior King on the Offensive.

When he comes, will we be found faithful soldiers in his army, engaged in the battle for the hearts and minds of men, bringing victory over the forces of evil?

Our heart is to carry this truth into the world. The message of the Gospel changes people. It is an offensive message. We as Christians must never be ashamed of it.
